Slip resistance - Coefficient of Friction (COF)

In relation to footwear, slip resistance is the amount of resistance (coefficient of friction) exerted by the sole of the shoe when moving over a given surface. This is measured on a scale based on the coefficient of friction (COF). This scale starts at 0.00, which is comparable to ice, oil or a similarly slippery surface, and goes up to 1.00, which is equivalent to walking on a dry carpet. Industry experts consider a value of 0.40 to be the benchmark for a shoe with above-average slip resistance.

Laboratory tests confirm kybun slip resistance

This is not only important for people working in specialised environments, but an important consideration for all of us. At kybun, this has always been an important factor in our research and development. The inventor of kybun, Karl Müller, has always talked about the slip resistance of kybun soles, and the latest tests under controlled laboratory conditions confirm this claim with excellent results*.

The following tests were carried out with the kybun sole on a standard slab of red quarry satra (combined test results):

Reverse front slide

Wet
Wet/oil

Forward heel slip

A proactive solution

Tips to avoid accidents:

  • Wear suitable footwear wherever possible
  • Always plan enough time for your journey
  • Keep fit with balance exercises as well as strength, endurance and flexibility training
  • From the age of 50, practise your balance in everyday life, e.g. when brushing your teeth on one foot
  • If possible, use paths that are free of snow and ice
The risk of falling: much higher than you think

Around a third of all people over the age of 65 have a significantly increased risk of falling, and every second person over the age of 70 has fallen at least once in their life. Medical consequences can be more serious than the fall itself, which is why good fall prevention is very important to minimise the risks in everyday life.
